Terrier-rising the locals

I secretly enjoy scaring Korean people with cute little dogs*.

Surprisingly it’s the most macho looking young men that tend to be the most afraid of the little fluff balls.  I often walk my friend’s shar pei which is a biggish dog by Korean standards.  (Most Korean dogs resemble cute, fluffy rats rather than canines.) In the past though I had the pleasure of babysitting another friend’s boxers – I got a few entertaining reactions to say the least!

*Not that I let the dogs chase after people or anything – it’s merely an entertaining side effect.  In spite of a leash, many Koreans seem to be convinced that the hound will maul them in a second should they get within 3 metres of it.

Bummer

We’ve all been there… don’t lie.

For those of you who don’t live in Korea;  in bathrooms here the toilet paper is not kept in each stall in a bathroom.   As you can see, there’s a big roll on the side of the wall in the room.  Not very helpful when you realise there’s a stall door between you and the very desperately needed toilet paper!  Oh the humanity!

Rubbish bin in the stalls?  Check.

Cigarette holder in the stalls?  Check.

Toilet paper?  Negative.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

The upside to this is restaurants usually have a big roll near their front door (on the way to the toilet) so if you happen to be walking down the street and nature calls you can just grab a bit of TP from the restaurant roll and Bob’s your Uncle!  It was very useful the other night in Wolpyeong let-me-tell-you.

It’s a peninsula – you’d think they’d be used to it by now!

Afternoon delight

This usually happens on Sunday.  Strolling along, appreciating the balmy weather and whaddayaknow there’s a couple of ajoshis not quite ready to finish their Saturday night outside the convenience store… or in the gutter passed out… or slumped in a McDonalds seat passed out… or halfway through a fence passed out… or on a train passed out… or in a park passed out… or in a noraebang passed out… or at a bustop passed out…

It’s funny ‘cos it’s true.

‘Tis but a scratch

Koreans seem to overreact about injuries, especially to kids.  My partner teacher freaked me out the first time she told me one of my students was in ‘hospital’.  Immediately, I conjured up images of my poor little student dying on a hospital bed.  Turns out they just use ‘hospital’ as a catch all phrase that could describe going to the doctor’s for a flu shot or being bed ridden with a terminal disease.  That doesn’t fly with me but at least now I know it’s not a death sentence to be in ‘hospital’ in Korea.

Howdy Stranger

This happened to my friend on the streets of Daejeon.  No idea who the guilty party was – clearly she wasn’t in the mood for fraternising!  A word to the wise: there aren’t many of us here in Korea, be nice to your fellow waeguks!
